1911 .22 Kit or Gun ?

I would like to do more practice and drills and am thinking of shooting a .22 in the 1911 style since I often carry a Kimber Ultra II.

I noticed a Midway sale (ends the 31st so I have to make up my mind quick) for the Kimber conversion ($289) and thought that might be the ticket. Then I noticed the Ceiner kit (with fixed sights) is only $199, so I was trying to decide that issue (fixed vs adj).

I ran across a website trying to get people to boycott Ceiner for poor customer support so that weighed against their product in my mind.

I am still a little confused as to the separate Govt. vs Commander models offered, as it get the impression that one will fit either and that neither will fit the Officers frame (I have all three but would like to use it on at least two and if I had to choose just one it would be the Commander). Any info as to the interchangeability of the two models?

Then I ran across this website http://www.1911-22.com and for about the price of a conversion kit they offer a complete 1911 style in .22. Anyone have any experience with these OR with other 1911 clones in .22 ? I know Kimber makes one but it is a little $$$.

I already have a Smith 41, Colt woodsman and Ruger Mk II among others, so unless you know of an XD .22 kit, I don't need any recommendations to change my focus from 1911 style - thanks anyway.

Thanks
Syber

Re: 1911 .22 Kit or Gun ?

Just shoot your Model 41....that is the finest non-target .22 ever made....in my mind it is pretty much a .22 target pistol. I shoot a Walther GSP in competition.....but shot Model 41 and Ruger prior to that. I only went from the Mod 41 to the GSP for more trigger adjustments.

Your 41 will closely emulate any 1911 in grip and weight.....and you can add weight if needed.

All target shooting will carry over....don't get too hung up on cross-training. You can even shoot a single shot air pistol across your house and become fantastic at action pistol in 45ACP.....I've done it. Shoot an air pistol for an hour every day for an entire Michigan winter - and I mean train - not just fling lead - and you'll become an expert. It's all sight allignment, hold and trigger control...beit slow fire or rapid....
Back on topic - I have the Ceiner .22 conversion in adjustable sights - it is their best/most $ kit....... very accurate off my 1911 target pistol. I can still outshoot that gun - but it will hold all in a quarter or smaller group at 50 feet from a machine rest....the GSP is one ragged hole ....but the GSP has a fixed barrel to it's frame.

So, unless you just want one to have one for fun....and you do not plan on competition with it and don't plan on shooting better than a 25 cent peice group at 50'....then get one. Ceiner or the Kimber kits are fine. Otherwise - stick to one of your existing .22 pistols. Ans just start shooting a lot more.....all shoting - with training in mind - not just spraying lead - will make you much better.

Get a good quality air pistol and start shooting at home between trips to the range. Plan on spending $250+ for a good one......$500ish for a very good one .....$1100 - $2000 for Olympic level.

Check out www.pilkguns.com for target shooting equipment.

Amazing - those Austrian Styer LP-10 air pistols were just over $1000 five years ago....now $2000......all because to fiat exchange rates.

Re: 1911 .22 Kit or Gun ?

Thanks - I considered using what I already have... but like many, I am always looking for a new toy :)
although they may be close in grip angle and some drills won't matter which gun is used they won't fit the same holsters, the balance isn't the same, the actual grips are different and the triggers and sights are different. I won't be target shooting per se but more tactical memory conditioning etc. for practical use and some local competition whan I have time. More for getting the rust off tactical skills and and to get away from the target shooting habits I have settled into over the last few years. I would like to use the guns I actually carry most often (45 and XD40 and 3913) with the holsters I use.

That Walther looks like a real nice gun. I think the M-41 is considered a true competition target model, unless you are talking about high end international competition guns like Hammerli ans the Walther but even then I always thought the 41 was supposed to be in that class even though it looks radically different. I suppose the lack of adjustment features doesn't make them comparable. Does anyone in those types of competitions use a 41 alongside competitors using the others? Actually, my 6" Colt Woodsman Match Target (circa 1967) out shoots my M-41 (circa 1982, either 5" or 7 3/8" bbl) most of the time (accuracy wise) and with more ammo brands but that might be just me shooting the Woodsman more than the 41. I have considered selling the 41 but I just fondled her and said...naw!

Have you tried phoning to the folks at Kimber?

I have an Advantage Arms target model top end. I've only used it on a govt frame though. When I have some free time, I'll have to test fit it on a CBOB.

Pro's: At $350, it's a pretty good deal. Sights were spot-on when I first shot it from a bench rest, it has been reliable, it locks the slide back on the last round, runs well on the $25 bricks of Remington golden bullets. Accurate ehough for bullseye shooting if you were so inclined.

Con's: it's just a hair taller than a normal 1911 slide so I need to break in a different holster and AA's manufacturing is not keeping up with demand.

If the Kimber kit was on sale at the time, I probably would have bought one instead of the AA kit. A friend of mine has a complete Kimber rimfire pistol and he is very happy with it.

I have Kimber 1911 and Kimber conversion kit .22 long rifle.
Don't use it to much,it is good for trigger control practicing ,but it has different sights ,so if you training with .22 conversion you see sights completely different....
But I don,t feel sorry for buying this conversion kit.

can recommend the kimber kit, highly. likes cci's and federal bulk pack. no malfunctions and over 2,000 rounds so far. great for practicing point shooting.

Re: 1911 .22 Kit or Gun ?

Although the Chiappa 1911-22 gets good user reviews over on a 1911 board I'm leaning toward the Kimber kit because with the Chiappa you have a gun and all that comes with it (good or bad) while with a .22 kit you can put it on different frames and be closer to what you will be using full bore. Plus Kimber is a known quality while the other is rather new on the market. I am going to do a little more research as the Midway sale price isn't exceptional as the kit can be had for that price other places fairly regularly.

I still need to know more about the "Govt" or the "Commander" size and what frames each kit fits.
Ciener offers 2 models (Govt. & Commander- 3/4" shorter slide) while Kimber has one (5" long)
From reading the various descriptions I get the impression the Kimber will fit the full size Govt and the Commander and _maybe_ an Officers but not the Ultra 3" size frame. I wonder why Ciener differentiates the two. If getting a specific Ciener kit would offer more flexibility as to frames it would fit, I would probably go for one of those.

Well.... I was going to go for the Advantage Arms kit because of the good reviews, the 275 price and the last shot hold open feature but I looked all day and couldn't find one in stock and the website says they are 14 weeks behind so.... I was going to wait but checking my email, the choice has been made. Midway sent an email special code for another $30 off a few minutes ago. Good thing I maintain a wish-list with stuff I'm gonna buy and use to pad up an order - all I had to do was add a couple nit-noid items to add $10 to the order and I got another $30 off and both of them were already on sale too. So I effectivly paid $259 for the Kimber conversion kit.

Its gonna be a fun 2010 :yippee:
